Eagles Keep Flying

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. – Cedric Washington rushed for a season-high 181 yards and Boston College got a key 63-yard fumble return from safety Pedro Cirino to defeat West Virginia 34-17 Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

BC quarterback Tim Hasselbeck tossed a 66-yard TD pass to Dedrick Dewalt and ran for another in helping the Eagles improve to 7-2 on the season and lock up one of the BIG EAST’s four bowl berths.

West Virginia got on the board first on the game’s initial possession when backup quarterback Brad Lewis hit tight end Anthony Becht for a nifty 15-yard touchdown pass.

Becht finished the afternoon with a career-high 105 yards on five receptions.

"We came in here and I thought we were ready," said the senior. "What are you going to do? It’s just one of those years."

Boston College answered later in the first quarter on a long six-play drive that ended with a 12-yard touchdown run by Carlton Rowe. Boston College’s 88-yard drive was produced entirely on the ground as BC’s mammoth offensive line created large holes against West Virginia’s defense.

After a John Matich 35-yard field goal made it 10-7, the Eagles expanded the lead to 17-7 on a Hasselbeck one-yard run. The quarterback’s plunge was set up on a 50-yard reception down the near sideline by Dewalt.

The Mountaineers answered with a Jay Taylor 41-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to close the margin to 17-10.

WVU came out in the second half and drove inside the Boston College 40 before disaster struck. West Virginia’s Khori Ivy fumbled a botched reverse and BC senior Pedro Cirino picked up the ball and raced 63 yards to put the Eagles up 24-10.

Shortly after Cirino’s play, Hasselbeck found Dewalt for a long 66-yard TD toss that put the game out of reach, 31-10.

West Virginia managed to make a game of it by at the end of the third quarter scoring on a bizarre 98-yard drive that featured five Mountaineer procedure penalties. Lewis found WVU fullback Anthony Green wide open in the end zone for a three-yard touchdown to close the margin to 31-17. On the scoring drive, Lewis completed nine-of-10 passes for 112 yards.

West Virginia was flagged a total of 12 times for 88 yards for the game.

"It’s hard to get nice drives going when you get things called back," lamented Becht.

Boston College iced the game on its following possession when Matich nailed his second field goal of the day from 26 yards out.

With road games remaining against Notre Dame and Virginia Tech, the worst the Eagles can finish the regular season is 7-4.

Their 24-23 win at Syracuse last week broke a string of four straight losing seasons since they beat Kansas State in the 1994 Aloha Bowl.

West Virginia, on the other hand, is in the midst of its worst season since posting a 4-7 record in 1990. The loss to Boston College represents the school’s first winless road mark since 1978 when WVU recorded a 2-9 record.

Washington’s 181 yards was the eighth time the Mountaineer defense has permitted an opposing ballcarrier to gain more than 100 yards in a game.

Lewis completed 21-of-33 passes for 229 yards and two touchdowns. Freshman Avon Cobourne moved closer to the 1,000-yard mark with 98 yards on 21 carries to leave him with 929 yards in nine games. Cobourne could become just the second freshman back in WVU history to reach the 1,000-yard mark with 71 yards in the season finale against Pitt.

The 3-7 Mountaineers will finish out the season against Pitt on Saturday, Nov. 27 at Mountaineer Field.
