Collegiate: Ron Wolfley was one of the top fullbacks to ever play at West Virginia … he helped usher in the Don Nehlen era at WVU, helping lead the Mountaineers to three straight 9-3 seasons and an 8-4 record as a senior to amass a four-year record of 35-13 … WVU played in four straight bowls during that time and won three of them (1981 Peach, W 26-6, Florida) (1983 Hall of Fame, W, 20-16, Kentucky) (1984 Bluebonnet, W 31-14, TCU) … helped pave the way for four straight years of national rankings, finishing in the Top 20 in each of those years … finished seventh on WVU’s all-time rushing yardage list by a fullback with 1,296 yards on 340 carries and 10 touchdowns.
1984 honors: Team captain … Gridiron Gladiator Award … led the Mountaineers in rushing with 475 yards on 127 carries, an average of 3.7 yards per carry and four touchdowns … had three catches for 55 yards, an average of 18.3 yards per catch and a touchdown … tied for the team lead in touchdowns with five … season-high 19 carries for 88 yards against Maryland … finished with 14 carries for 39 yards and a touchdown against Boston College … had 40 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown in one of the greatest wins in school history over Penn State.
1983 honors: Second leading rusher on the team with 485 yards on 122 carries, an average of 4.0 yards per carry and four touchdowns … eight catches for 47 yards … season-high 114 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown against Boston College … finished with 41 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown at Maryland … registered 84 yards on 18 carries against Pitt.
1982 honors: Second leading rusher on the team with 355 yards and two touchdowns
1981 honors: Rushed for 13 yards.
Professional: Drafted in the fourth round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the St. Louis Cardinals … he was known as a bullish fullback and a fearless special teams player … earned four NFL Pro Bowl honors from 1986-1989 .. played two seasons for Cleveland from 1992-94 … returned to St. Louis for a final season in 1995 … only player to have played in St. Louis for the Cardinals and the Rams … for his career, he finished with 263 yards on 86 carries and two touchdowns … had 26 catches for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
Currently, the color analyst for the Arizona Cardinals radio broadcasts … also co-hosts an afternoon, drive time sports talk show on KTAR Radio in Phoenix, Ariz., the Doug and Wolf show.
